About this journal

Your first pottery class ended with a lopsided pinch pot and a clay-covered phone. You went back anyway. Now you're buying your own tools, watching wheel videos at midnight, and wondering why Tuesday's mug came out great while Thursday's collapsed.

Pottery has a long memory. Clay reacts to everything you do, and the kiln gives its verdict weeks later, long after you've forgotten which clay, glaze, or technique you used. Ceramics, Properly is a pottery journal that keeps track for you, so when something works, you can actually make it again.

Each studio session follows a simple routine: pick one skill, get your hands in clay, write down what you did, and look back when the piece comes out of the kiln. It moves through three levels. You start with wedging and handbuilding, such as pinch, coil, and slab. Then you move to the wheel with centering, pulling walls, and trimming, aiming for mugs that almost match. Finally, you explore glazing, surface decoration, and firing until your work starts to look like yours.

It also covers the useful basics most beginners pick up slowly: how clay dries from wet to bone dry, why wedging matters, and how to handle clay dust safely.

What's inside

  • 12 studio session logs — remember what you tried and what happened
  • 12 technique trackers — see your centering and walls improve over time
  • 6 piece and kiln logs — record each piece's full recipe from clay to firing
  • 3 glaze logs — so you never forget which glaze made that green you loved
  • 6 teacher and studio notes pages — for the tips you'd otherwise lose on your apron
  • 3 form sketch pages and 3 "Outside Eyes" pages — plan shapes and get honest feedback
  • 15 skill pages across three levels, a glossary, goal pages, and 12 self-reflection pages

It's for new and returning potters taking studio classes, community workshops, or learning at the kitchen table with a bag of clay. It's also a sweet gift for the friend who now gives everyone handmade mugs for Christmas, or anyone who just signed up for their first wheel class.

The kiln will still keep a few pieces. At least now you'll know why.
