About this journal

It's 11 p.m. and you're still replaying the match. The first touch that bounced off your shin. The pass you played backward because you never looked up. The run you should have made and didn't. By Tuesday training, you'll have forgotten half of it, and the same things will happen again on Saturday.

The Football Journey is a football training journal for players who want to break that loop. It gives each match somewhere to go after the final whistle, and it gives each training session a point: one focus, worked on with the ball first and then with someone trying to take it off you.

Most players train their feet. This book also trains the part that happens before the ball arrives. You'll start with ball mastery, first touch, and passing with both feet, then move on to scanning, movement off the ball, defending, and playing your position properly. The last level covers reading the game, fitness and injury prevention, playing under pressure, and leadership. You move up only when the milestone page is honestly ticked, and the targets are ones you can measure, like 3,000 touches in a week or eight of ten first touches into space with a defender closing.

Your weak foot won't get to hide, either. The skill tracker logs both feet side by side, and the gap between them is the number you'll most enjoy watching shrink.

What's inside

  • 12 training session logs — what you drilled, and what held up once a defender got involved
  • 12 skill trackers — strong foot and weak foot recorded separately
  • 9 match logs — your job that day, the decision you'd take back, and one thing to bring to training
  • 3 match footage review pages — what you actually do when the ball is somewhere else
  • 6 "Notes From My Coach" pages — instructions in their words, not your fuzzy memory of them
  • 15 skill focus pages across three levels, each with a drill and a common mistake to avoid
  • A glossary, kit check, goal pages, 12 weekly reflections, and a progress chart

It suits club and school players, futsal and weekend-league regulars, and adults who came back to football and want to be better than they were at 16. It's a good gift for the teammate who stays after training to hit the wall, or for a teenager heading into varsity tryouts, with a new ball to go with it.

Skill gets you picked. Good decisions keep you on the pitch.
