About this journal
You gave your kid a camera. Within an hour, there were 400 photos on the card: the floor, the dog's back, a very close-up nostril, and one surprisingly good shot of the sky that nobody can explain.
The interest is clearly there. What's missing is someone to show them how.
Snapshots to Photographs, Kids Camera Edition, is a photography journal written for kids to work through on their own. It teaches one dial at a time, in short pages and plain words, so the camera stops being confusing and starts feeling like theirs. There are three badges to earn: Camera (holding it, focusing, and what the buttons do), Light (the three settings, portraits, action, and editing), and Photographer (telling stories with photos, projects, prints, and sharing safely).
Before any of that, it covers the rules that matter most. Ask before you photograph a person. If they say no, lower the camera. Never post a photo of another kid without asking. A grown-up checks anything before it goes online. There's even a spot to write down which grown-up that is, and a reminder that no photo is worth stepping into a road or near an edge.
What's inside
- 12 shoot logs — kids write down where they went and which photos they liked
- 12 settings trackers — see which dials they've learned and what each one did
- 9 "My Best Photos" pages — a place to be proud of their keepers
- 6 "Notes From Somebody Who Knows" pages — tips from a parent, tito, or photographer friend
- 3 "Somebody Looked at My Photos" pages — kind feedback from someone else
- 15 skill focus pages across three badges, each with something to try
- Safety rules, a kit check, a glossary, goals, badge checks, and 12 self-reflection pages
It's written for kids roughly 8 to 13 who have a real camera, whether it's a hand-me-down or a brand-new kids' camera. It makes a great gift from a ninong or ninang alongside a first camera, or for summer break when you'd like a hobby that gets them outside and off the tablet.
It's a real skill with a finish line. And by the last badge, you may want to frame a few of their photos.
