About this journal
Your kid already knows how to take photos on a phone. Hundreds of them. Mostly of the cat, their own face, and the ceiling fan, with maybe one good shot buried somewhere you'll never find.
They have the camera. What they haven't learned yet is how to see.
Snapshots to Photographs, Kids Phone Edition, is a photography journal written for kids to work through on their own, using the phone that's already in the house. It teaches the things that actually make a photo good, which were never about the gear: where the light is coming from, where to stand, and waiting for the right moment. Instead of taking two hundred quick shots, kids take twenty careful ones, then look back at the end of the week and pick their favorites.
There are three badges to earn: Eye (light, where to stand, and the phone's real controls), Craft (editing, portraits, tricky light, and a best-twenty collection), and Photographer (telling stories, sharing safely, and making prints to give away). And before any of that come the rules. Ask before photographing anyone. Never post a photo of another kid without asking. A grown-up checks everything before it goes online. Never go somewhere alone for a photo.
What's inside
- 12 shoot logs — where they went, what they tried, and which photos they kept
- 12 task trackers — small photo challenges that build real skills
- 9 "My Best Photos" pages — room to show off their favorites
- 6 "Notes From Somebody Who Knows" pages — tips from a parent, cousin, or photographer friend
- 3 "Somebody Looked at My Photos" pages — kind, useful feedback from someone else
- 15 skill focus pages across three badges, each with something to go out and try
- Safety rules, a kit check, a glossary, goals, badge checks, and 12 self-reflection pages
It's for kids who love taking phone photos and parents who'd rather that screen time teach them something, including good habits about consent and sharing. It's a nice gift from a ninang for a kid who just got their first phone, or a rainy-season project that doesn't need anything new to buy.
Fewer photos, better photos. And maybe a print or two worth putting on the ref.
